Coronavirus relief fund launched by N.J.’s first lady and celebrities awards its first grants

The coronavirus relief fund founded by first lady Tammy Murphy with the support of N.J. celebrities initially is going to help food banks throughout the state.

The New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund announced Thursday that it had awarded grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to 110 service organizations.

The groups all are affiliated with one of the state’s three main food banks: Community FoodBank of NJ, the South Jersey Food Bank, and Fulfill, the former Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

“We organized the NJPRF to meet four critical challenges of our state in the face of the COVID19 crisis: Stop the spread, support the health care community, provide help for the vulnerable, and rebuild,” said Tammy Murphy, wife of Gov. Phil Murphy. “We begin with this food distribution effort, as it is one that is most urgent.”

The pandemic fund said these were the groups that could immediately help area residents if they had the financial resources to do so.

“Without this assistance, some pantries might have had to close their doors or reduce services, leaving neighbors searching for their next meal and putting additional pressure on the other local organizations,” Murphy said.

Murphy kicked off the fund last month with a video featuring Jon Bon Jovi, Stephen Colbert, Danny DeVito, Whoopi Goldberg, Carli Lloyd, Charlie Puth, Bruce Springsteen and Jon Stewart, all Garden State natives and/or residents.

The state now has at least 51,027 coronavirus cases with 1,700 deaths.
