High school seniors at Bangor Area High School may miss out on a ceremony this year, but they will get treated to some fireworks and words of encouragement from a celebrity filmmaker.
As a means to do something special for the senior class, the district is putting on a fireworks show for the graduates and their immediate families.
The graduation ceremony will be streamed online at 6 p.m. Thursday with various speakers, including actor and director Kevin Smith of “Clerks” and “Comic Book Men” fame.
At 9 p.m., graduates and their families are invited to the Potomac Street Community Park in Upper Mount Bethel Township for a fireworks display choreographed to music.
Attendees must remain in their vehicles.
“It’s a little something special to give them an opportunity to maintain our social distancing but give them an opportunity to celebrate with the community at large,” school board member Michael Goffredo said.
Upper Mount Bethel Township is aiding with assistance from the local fire police and fire fighters.
Also, last week, the district streamed an online video for the senior awards ceremony.
High schools across the Lehigh Valley have been planning alternatives to traditional graduation ceremonies this month. Some students have petitioned school districts to postpone in-person graduations for when it’s safe rather than cancel them altogether.
