Celebrity chef hosts popular annual fundraiser for NH Food Bank


Four talented chefs who represented restaurants from across the state competed for top honors at New Hampshire Food Bank’s fifth annual Steel Chef Challenge fundraiser Monday.Food Network celebrity chef Michael Symon hosted the event for nearly 700 guests at the sold-out event at the Doubletree by Hilton in Manchester.Symon and his staff prepared a gourmet meal for attendees and said: ” There are a lot of people with food insecurities in the world and the face of hunger is not always what people expect it to be. So, whenever you can get involved with a food bank, especially what they’re doing here in New Hampshire, it’s very special.”Representatives from the food bank said that 1 in 9 people in the state are food insecure and do not know where their next meal is coming fromThe winner, by the tightest margin in the history of the event, Brendan Vesey, executive chef and owner of Botanica Restaurant and Gin Bar in Portsmouth.The chefs are not told ahead of time what the ingredients will be; this year’s list included carp and mushrooms.WMUR’s Erin Fehlau served as a judge at the event.
