Celebrities, participants react to cancellation of SXSW


Celebrities and planned attendees for SXSW are reacting to the news that the annual conference has been canceled due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Actor Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Marvel’s The Eternals) tweeted, saying “caution is key.” Nanjiani was scheduled to be a part of A Conversation with the executive producers of Apple’s “Little America” at SXSW.

Screenwriter C. Robert Cargill (Marvel’s Doctor Strange) shared his thoughts on the cancelation affecting filmmakers.

Art critic with New York Magazine Jerry Saltz shared his reaction to the news too.

Actress Patricia Arquette’s brother David was set to premiere his documentary “You Cannot Kill David Arquette” at SXSW.

Indiewire film critic David Ehrlich said he is “heartbroken for everyone affected by the SXSW cancellation.”

Film critic Christy Lemire said she was “stunned to learn SXSW has been canceled.”

Musician Questlove shared SXSW’s statement, saying he was “so looking forward to this.”

Rooster Teeth CCO Matt Hullum commented on the cancelation, saying he is “grateful to the city and SXSW for prioritizing health and safety over commerce.”

Liverpool musician Natalie McCool shared SXSW’s statement and said “I believe people’s safety should always come first, and it was the right decision in light of the circumstances.”
