People till date give much more priority to physical illness than mental illness. Mental illness has been a prolonged taboo in the society. Depression has become more usual than ever in today’s scenario, with more than 264 million people being affected.
Bollywood celebrities are the role models. Inspired by them people tend to imitate their lifestyle, the things they wear, the cars they drive. But one fails to understand, that despite having a dream come true life, one is not restrained from mental illness. The bubble of perfect life burst as soon as people come to know the reality about it.
The prominent Bollywood Celebrities who have been a target of depression:
- Deepika Padukone
A lady who is admired by a lot of people because of her alluring style, dealt with depression. She has been amongst the bravest when she broke the silence and stigma around depression sharing her journey through it on the national television. In 2015, he opened up and had an honest conversation with the media about her brawl with ‘D’ lettered demon. She shared the struggles she under gone and how she overcame it. She has been amongst those who have battled with the mental illness and came out gracefully.
- Shah Rukh Khan
The epitome of love and romance, the very one King Khan of Bollywood had also struggled with depression. When the actor underwent a major shoulder surgery in 2010. While dealing with the pain of the shoulder injury, the 54 year old superstar quoted, “Due to the shoulder injury, and the suffering, I had got into a depression mode, but now I am out of it. I feel happy and boosted with energy.”
- Amitabh Bachchan
Big B was also the victim of depression when he turned producers in 1996 and experienced back to back failures. In 2000, the veteran actor dealt with a financial Chris and was on the verge of loosing everything he had. The actor went under the phase of depression and eventually managed to cope with it. He also stated that, “Depression is something that anyone and everyone can suffer and that the society must improve its outlook towards it and deal with it in healthy ways.”
- Karan Johar
The Indian film director, producer battled with clinical depression for two long years. The 48 year old movie maker shared that how he had to take anti-anxiety medications. He enunciated, “I have read people speaking openly about their depression. There was a phase in my life when I was really depressed. When I went through that phase, I thought I am getting a cardiac arrest. I felt it in the middle of a meeting two and half years ago, after which I left the meeting in between saying I have something urgent to do and rushed to the doctor. He then said I am having an anxiety attack. I went to a psychologist post that. Then I realised that I had some internal issues to deal with, which got built up to such point that it resulted in anxiety.” He also, emphasised on the importance of undergoing session and therapies for the betterment of one self.
The actor while shooting for the movie ‘Badlapur’ in which he enacted the role of a psycho, he experienced depression. The actor mentioned that the did not want to throw around the term ‘depression’ loosely, even though he had gone into a shell of his own during the filming of the movie. He also broached that his mind was constantly being dragged towards the negative zone.
